Bulgarian Relations Are Key

Garnering the support of neighbouring countries has been a key part of the EU accession process for all countries striving to join the bloc. As such, the latest spat between Bulgaria and Macedonia is a little worrying. Bulgarian Foreign Minister Ivailo Kalfin has suggested that his country's support for Macedonian entry should not be unconditional. He went on to say that progress was needed on good neighbourly relations and Macedonia needed to exhibit lack of aggression towards the Bulgarian nation and history. The mayor of Blagoevgrad, in Western Bulgaria, has also been quoted as saying "Macedonians should go in Macedonia".
