Elections Fall Off Calendar

August 2005 | Ratings Update

Recourse to fresh elections, which appeared likely in view of comments by President Traian Basescu, is now off the short-term political calendar. Following discussions with EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu has instead decided to keep his government intact, and will be hoping that a parliamentary vote of approval in July will now permit leadership stability. The structural reforms necessitated by EU candidacy, and immediate demands created by damaging floods render the climate for new elections particularly unfavourable.
