No Hope For Peace?

Hopes that Kosovo's uncertain future status can be resolved peacefully have been knocked after aggressive confrontations between Kosovan Serbs and Albanians. UN plans to encourage freedom of movement in the region by opening the bridge separating the Serbian north from the rest of the Albanian-dominated region were ruined as Serbs blocked the route and hurled stones at a driver attempting to cross the bridge. The affair demonstrates continuing animosity between ethnic groups, and increases the risk of violence as moves to increase Kosovan independence begin in 2006.
