Following criticism from international observers, including the Council of Europe and the Commission for the Balkans, over the powers afforded to the Bosnia's international administrator, there are growing signs that the role of the High Representative of the International Community is being adjusted to conform better to democratic principles. The incumbent, Lord Ashdown, has recently announced that over the coming 18 months, the role will be transformed into the position of special EU representative in Bosnia. To what extent this change will curtail the powers available to the representative is not yet decided.
