July 2006 | Risk SummaryThe EU has declared its support for the direction taken by the Kyrgyz government since coming to power in the 'tulip revolution' last year, praising in particular the authorities' tolerance of public demonstrations and willingness to negotiate with the opposition - unrivalled in Central Asia. However, these factors have also rendered Kyrgyzstan one of the most politically unstable in the region, with organised crime penetrating political circles and public discontent growing amid a perception of stalled progress in reforms. We expect the political environment to remain fragile in the short term, with a constitutional referendum this autumn the next milestone.
