July 2006 | Risk SummaryThe leaders of the separatist region of Transdniestria are planning to hold a referendum on its future status - either integrated as part of Moldova or a Moscow-affiliated independent state. It is, however, highly unlikely that a vote for the latter will change much in the area, as the international community will not recognise the outcome, and not support its independence. Instead, we believe the situation will remain deadlocked over the next few years, with Russian peacekeeping troops remaining in Transdiestria, and negotiations between all sides yielding little progress.
