November 2005 | Risk SummaryNegotiations have resumed on the troubled Transdniestria province, with the EU and US now included in an observatory role. After 15 months of silence, the new round of talks represents a welcome development in itself. Yet, despite a slightly more balanced negotiating format, Russian influence remains strongest, and we still cannot see a breakthrough on the horizon. As long as the region remains internationally unrecognised with an uncertain future status, we expect it to continue to play host to widespread illegal trafficking – acting as a destabilising force in the region.
