Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov has held talks on security co-operation with US military's Central Command, General John Abizaid, in August. Amid tension in Central Asia over the presence of US troops, Abizaid reassured the president that America's regional bases are aimed at supporting operations in Afghanistan and not at seeking confrontation. Indeed, talks reportedly covered bilateral co-operation over fighting terrorism and drug smuggling, with plans to enhance military, commerce and social ties.
