August 2005 | Risk SummaryKurmanbek Bakiyev has won a landslide victory in the presidential elections held on July 10, replacing veteran leader Askar Akayev, who was toppled during the 'tulip revolution' in March. The Central Election Commission reported that 88% of voters had backed Bakiyev in the elections, which was endorsed by the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe as marking 'tangible progress' towards democracy. However, although Bakiyev has said that the new government, with former rival Felix Kulov as the prime minister should boost stability in the country, there is still the potential for unrest.
