The two traditional global superpowers have clashed over the political future of Belarus. U.S. Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice, has declared that it is "time for a change" in what she called Europe's "last dictatorship". Moscow's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, immediately leaped to the defence of the country some consider Russia's last remaining ally from the former Soviet bloc, denouncing any regime change.
