July 2004 | Macroeconomic ForecastsConsumer price inflation in May reached 1.1% in comparison to the same month in 2003, as the prices of both consumer goods and services rose. The cost of food items and non-alcoholic beverages climbed by 2.1%, transport by 3.5% and miscellaneous goods and services by 6.1%. According to the official statistics agency, the CPI level was also forced up by a 1.0% jump in housing and energy charges. In particular, an unexpectedly large surge in central heating costs allied to the annulment of a VAT exemption contributed to a 16.1% surge in prices.
