Intolerance Problems
June 2006 | Ratings UpdateThe European Parliament adopted a resolution in June naming Poland as a country of 'growing intolerance stemming from xenophobia, anti-Semitism and homophobia,' reminding the country of its commitments to human rights under EU Treaties, and threatening possible sanctions. While the government immediately refuted the claims, and the EU is unlikely to take any further steps, they highlight Poland's social divisions between young and old, urban and rural communities, and the problems of being a strongly Catholic country integrating into a Europe of increasingly liberal and secular values.
