SzDSz: A Good Influence
May 2006 | Ratings UpdateThe governing Socialist-Free Democrat (SzDSz) coalition increased their majority in April's elections, gaining an extra 12 members in the 386-seat National Assembly. The coalition partners differ markedly over healthcare policy (the Socialists favour a single insurer scheme, versus SzDSz's greater choice of private provision) and taxes (SzDSz have proposed a flat rate), but the more radical junior partner will ensure reform is not entirely brushed under the carpet. The likely inclusion of outspoken incumbent Finance Minister Janos Koka in the new government line-up is also encouraging from this perspective.
