Fighting The Gas Giant
January 2006 | Political Risk AnalysisPoland’s politicians have been up in arms since Russia and Germany agreed in 2004 to build a new EUR4bn gas pipeline bypassing the country without its consultation. They argue the new project will permit Russia to raise Polish gas prices, currently at a discount because of transit considerations, and regain political leverage over the country. Securing independent energy supplies has since become an important part of the government’s agenda, to the detriment of already chilling relations with Russia.
