There are signs of increased co-operation between the incumbent CSSD government and Communist (KSCM) party, which could lead to an unexpected alliance in the forthcoming parliamentary elections. The departure of long-serving leader, Miroslav Grebenicek, from the KSCM has intensified speculation that the party may look to move closer to mainstream politics. A leftist coalition might be the only way to close the gap on the Civic Democrat (ODS) opposition, but this option is risky for both parties, as it could isolate core voters.
