Strong PM Fights Losing Battle
July 2005 | Political Risk AnalysisWhen Jiri Paroubek was appointed the new Czech prime minister, replacing Stanislav Gross after the financial scandal that ultimately forced his resignation, little was expected of him and his so-called "caretaker government". To his credit, Paroubek has started determinedly in his new role, quickly earning the respect of his political critics and increasing support for the Social Democrat party. However, the government remains weakened by the crisis that crippled its operations, and the troubled EU constitution is a constant thorn in its side. Consequently, for all his promising intentions, we expect Paroubek to make few inroads on important domestic policy
