June 2005 | Political Risk AnalysisThe ratification of the EU constitution, widely considered the so-called 'caretaker government's' primary objective, has the potential to destabilise domestic politics in the Czech Republic. In the wake of the resounding French 'non' and Dutch 'nee' to the EU constitution, the eurosceptic president Vaclav Klaus, the main opposition Civic Democrat Party (ODS) and even the junior coalition Christian Democrats have called for the ratification process to be halted altogether. The ruling coalition, in what might be interpreted as an attempt at compromise, has proposed that more time be given before the ratification of the treaty.
