In a surprise development, former prime minister Vladimir Meciar was defeated in the second round of the presidential election in April. BMI View: The result is welcome news to the financial markets and Slovakia's European partners, who had feared that a Meciar victory could have signalled a return to the authoritarian leadership style of the 1990s.
