In a surprise development, former prime minister Vladimir Meciar was defeated in the second round of the presidential election in April. BMI View: The result is welcome news to the financial markets and Slovakia's European partners, who had feared that a Meciar victory could have signalled a return to the authoritarian leadership style of the 1990s. Political uncertainties remain, however, including over how the election winner, Ivan Gasparovic, will work with the government, and over the possibility of a vote of no confidence in Finance Minister Ivan
