October 2012 |Moldova's pro-EU government faces clashes with Russia as it moves away from Moscow's sphere of influence and towards European integration. During a visit to Moscow to try and secure cut-price gas imports, Prime Minister Vlad Filat was told that it would only be possible if Moldova rejected the Europe Energy Community Agreement that weakens Gazprom's position in the region. Unconfirmed rumors that Moldova will allow the formation of a NATO base within its territory, as well as the ban on all communist symbols that came into effect on October 1 will further raise tensions between Chisinau and Moscow, undermining efforts to solve the Transdniestria frozen conflict
