Turkmen security forces carried out inaugural anti-terrorist naval drills on September 5 on the Caspian Sea near the western seaport of Turkmenbashi. This comes on the back of rising tensions between Turkmenistan and Caspian littoral state Azerbaijan over the oil rich Caspian. This is in line with our view and we expect to see intermittent flaring of tensions between Turkmenistan and Azerbaijan over the coming years as a resolution to the Caspian Sea border delimitation remains out of reach. Moreover, we expect that outside actors, namely Russia and Iran, will continue to stoke tensions in order to keep the Trans-Caspian Gas Pipeline project on ice.
