September 2012 | Risk SummaryRussian troops initiated tactical military exercises on September 19 at Russia's Lyaur military test field near the capital city of Dushanbe in Tajikistan. The manoeuvres, involving the 201st Motorized Rifle Division's mountain infantry troops, will last until the weekend of September 22 and 23. Around 800 troops are expected to focus on training camouflage and reinforcing positions in the mountains, special combat tasks with mountain equipment, and crossing minefields. These manoeuvres speak well to our long-held view that cooperation between Tajikistan and regional heavy-weights would increase ahead of the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2014. This is a trend we expect to remain in place over the coming years.
