August 2012 | Ratings UpdateTurkey has called for international assistance in response to the sizeable number of refugees crossing the border from Syria to Turkey in light of the ongoing violence in Syria. Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu recently stated that around 80,000 refugees had fled Syria into Turkey since March 2011, and that he would inform the ‘relevant bodies of the United Nations’ at the UN Security Council meeting at the end of August about potential burden sharing solutions. The Turkish government has estimated that the cost of Turkey’s refugee protection efforts could be around US$300mn.
