The recent trial and subsequent conviction of Russian rock band ‘Pussy Riot’ has reinforced our view that President Vladimir Putin's decision to promote liberal economists to cabinet posts does not imply he will liberalise the political arena anytime soon. As we recently argued, Putin retains significant influence over the cabinet, while conservative hardliners dominate other key government positions. Although there are signs that he will encourage economic liberalisation for certain sectors, his tenure will be characterised by attempts to maintain a tight grip on power.
