Turkmenistan's President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov has invited President of Tajikistan, Emomali Rakhmon, to visit Turkmenistan, whilst both were at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio de Janeiro, held June 20-22. Berdymukhammedov expressed interest in boosting cooperation in the energy, transport and communications sectors. While increased cooperation between Tajikistan and Turkmenistan is more likely to benefit the former rather than the latter, we still view this as a positive development. We have long argued that cooperation in the Central Asian region will become increasingly important as the US withdrawal from Afghanistan draws closer given the expectation for an uptick in instability on the steppe.
