International mining majors and the foreign investment community in Mongolia will keep a close eye on political developments in the run-up to the parliamentary election in June. With the governing coalition collapsing on January 20 questions will be raised over the nature of the election campaign and scope for the same degree of political cooperation as seen since 2008. Concerns are particularly likely to surface over growing rhetoric on restricting mining companies' stakes in mining projects as well as imposing stricter environmental regulations. Fears over a more restrictive investment climate could alienate the investment community.
