On January 23 - a week after Kazakhstan's January 15 parliamentary elections - the authorities raided the offices and homes of opposition party Alga officials, which was banned from competing in the election, as part of an investigation in the violent unrest that led to the death of 16 people in the town of Zhanaozen in December. Following the raid one party official was charged with inciting social unrest.
