Turkish military aircraft killed 35 people in an attack on December 28 in South-Eastern Turkey. The Turkish military stated that it had been targeting Kurdish rebels on the border of Iraq in response to new threats against Turkish military bases; however, reports suggest that the targets could have instead been smugglers, mistaken for militants. As we recently noted, with tensions between Kurdish rebels (in particular members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party) and the Turkish government having soured in recent months, there is strong potential for violence in the region to escalate further.
