Uzbekistan is likely to benefit greatly from increased cooperation with the US, following the latter's decision to suspend sanctions and provide the Central Asian country with military aid. Politically, increased cooperation will help supply a counterbalance to Russian influence in the region; militarily, the government will benefit from increased counter-terrorism capabilities. On the downside, lacking US pressure, Uzbekistan will be less prone to address its poor democratic and human rights record, leading to continued international isolation.
