The Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism visited Ulan Bator on November 7, on invitation of a Buddhist group. Beijing immediately filed an official complaint with Mongolia's government, which decided to relocate some of the lectures of the spiritual leader to more discrete venues. Following a previous visit of Mongolia in 2002, China retaliated by closing the border rail crossing for two days, leaving 500 passengers stranded and the mining sector in disarray.
