Negotiations aimed at resolving Moldova's frozen conflict with Transdniester are set to resume under the so-called 5+2 format, after a five-year hiatus. The announcement came in September, after Prime Minister Vlad Filat had met with the (internationally unrecognised) president of the region, Igor Smirnov, with signs that the first new round of talks could take place before the end of the year. Renewed dialogue is an encouraging step, though with no change in the position of both sides or mediators, we do not see a breakthrough in the foreseeable future.
