Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the Strong Ukraine party, Sergiy Tihipko announced on August 16 the merger between his own party and the lead ruling coalition party, the Party of Regions. The consolidation of power continues apace in Ukraine, a dynamic we had long-highlighted would play out strongly under President Viktor Yanukovich's time in office and ahead of the next round of parliamentary polls due in October 2012. The move will close the gap in the ruling coalition, possibly removing some of the ability of the opposition to drive a wedge between the two partners in power.
