Montenegro and Nepal agreed to elevate their diplomatic relations to the ambassadorial level at a meeting in New York City on July 18, reflecting the countries' deepening ties as well as efforts on the part of both governments to increase their respective visibility abroad. The two sides pledged to boost economic, political and cultural ties in the years ahead. The announcement makes Nepal the 132nd country to establish ties with the Western Balkan nation and puts the country well ahead of the regional average, which continues to be haunted in its external relations by the legacy of the wars following the break-up of the former Yugoslavia, which continue to divide international public opinion.
