Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kazykanov met with British Foreign Secretary William Hague and Members of Parliament on a July visit to the UK. The issue of Kazakh-British trade was high on the agenda, as was the possibility of a visit by Prime Minister David Cameron to Kazakhstan towards the end of this year. However, both governments' efforts to build ties have been dealt a blow by the UK Home Office's July 12 decision to grant political asylum to Mukhtar Ablyazov, a political opponent of President Nazarbayev wanted on charges related to organised crime in Kazakhstan.
