Succession Question To The Fore
May 2011 | Political Risk AnalysisThe re-election of President Nursultan Nazarbayev on April 3 bolsters the nation's already sanguine short-term political outlook, with the president well placed to further his economic reform agenda. However, the result does little to address the biggest risk facing Kazakhstan, namely the lack of a credible successor to 70-year-old Nazarbayev. Therefore, it is crucial that the president uses his renewed mandate to lay the foundations for an eventual succession in order to bolster Kazakhstan's long-term political stability.
