Customs Union To Offer Political And Economic Anchor
April 2011 | Political Risk AnalysisWe view positively Kyrgyzstan's decision to join the Russian customs union owing to the political and economic benefits it will bestow upon the central Asian country. We caution, however, that joining the union and playing into Russia's expansion of its influence into Central Asia will not only mean relinquishing autonomy in foreign economic policy but could also put Kyrgyzstan in a difficult position with the West in the future.
